Misc tips and suggestions

I just spent 2 days, 1 night in Everglades City and wanted to share the following:

We stayed at the Rod and Gun ... I%26#39;m very glad we did and would recommend the hotel to anyone planning on staying the night in Everglades City. The price was right - $95 (we got the off-season rates, I think they go up in a few weeks). The main entrance is very nice - polished wood, a pool table, cozy atmosphere. There is a separate bar where they do serve drinks. The restaurant looks very nice (we didn%26#39;t eat there, though, as we wanted to try the other restaurants). You can eat inside or outside. Outside is lovely - a nice screened patio. We stayed in one of their cottages - the room was nothing fancy, but it was fine. I especially liked the screened porch in our cottage - nice to sit outside in the evening and have a glass of wine on your own porch! If you want to know how Florida was like in the 1940s and 50s - this is the place to go. No, it isn%26#39;t the Four Seasons, but you don%26#39;t go to Everglades City to stay in a fancy, high-end hotel. If you want a fancy, high-end, perfect room with new furnishings, then go to Marco Island or Naples. But if you want to see something different, stay a night in Everglades City at the Rod and Gun. I read a previous comment on the Everglades Forum concerning the noise of airboats going by the Rod and Gun (the hotel is on the water) - but I didn%26#39;t notice this at all. In fact, it was very lovely to be able to walk outside my cottage and walk 20 feet down to the river. If I came back to Everglades City I would definitely stay here again.

We ate at 3 different places:

lunch at the Seafood Depot - the food was good (fried gator, fried frog%26#39;s legs, grouper sandwich) and we sat on a screened patio overlooking the water. Very nice.

dinner at the Oyster House - also very good and the waitress was super nice. Ate more fried fish and had delicious chowder soup.

breakfast at the Roadkill Cafe - was good, yummy biscuits.

We had our bikes with us and biked to Smallwood%26#39;s Store/Museum. It cost $3 to get in, but was worth it. They had a tv set up with a dvd playing about the history of the area.

The highlight of our stay, though was the boat tour at Everglades National Park - we saw lots of dolphin! The dolphin were even playing in the wake of our boat - it was very special!

We had a wonderful time. One night was enough, though. Unless you want to fish or kayak you don%26#39;t really need more time.

Enjoyed your report and was especially interested in your observations on the Rod and Gun. We peeked in late September and were in awe of the entrance lobby! Too bad you never ate there as would have liked somebody%26#39;s opinion on the cuisine.

We ate ate the seafood depot and sat in the screened porch too but there were a few mosquitoes wanted to share as well.

Oyster house not as good as we remembered first time but it was a very slow period.

Anybody got comments on the Triad cafe/restaurant?

I have a few questions. I am thinking of staying at the rod and gun. Are the cottages clean? I understand that they are rustic, and that is what I want. Is it right on the water? If so how close to the water are the cottages? Were you able to view alligators close by, or any wildlife for that matter? Could you describe the cottages a bit more?
