Tallahassee is about 2.5 hours from Destin and about 1 hour from St. George%26#39;s Island. Florida State is there. Your friend may like it there as well because it is the State Capitol.
Also, you may want to PM Suma, she lives in Tallahassee.
Secondly, in Tampa there is the University of South Florida, but I don%26#39;t know much about that area.
Central Florida there are many colleges and basically you can be at either the Atlantic or Gulf in a couple of hours.
