skim boarding/boogie boarding

Hi All,

I was wondering if the beaches on longboat key are good for skim boarding/boogie boarding. My teens ';want'; a beach that offers this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We%26#39;re looking at late April if that matters.

Thanks

Stephanie

Yes -- the beaches from Longboat to Anna Maria are busy with kids doing both (watched by those no longer limber enough to do either without risk of significant injury!)

I learned to do both (back in the day...creak) at Coquina Beach, in between Longboat and Anna Maria.

Thank you Sunshine. What is the water like for those of us too old to skim. Is the water real salty and bouncy to just hang out in?

Thanks

Real salty? I suppose if you had precise instruments, you%26#39;d find that it%26#39;s somewhat more salty, just because it%26#39;s warmer here, so the salinity tends to be slightly higher due to evaporation...but the difference between here and Boston won%26#39;t be noticeable to a swimmer.

The water%26#39;s a lot warmer, though! The water temperature along the middle Gulf is right now in the low to mid 60%26#39;s -- by summer, it%26#39;s well into the 80s -- bathwater, indeed!

The Gulf Coast is considerably calmer than the Atlantic Coast, but ';bouncy'; varies depending on the weather -- it can be quite uncomfortable if there%26#39;s a storm, and only gentle waves when it%26#39;s calm...and can go from calm to rough within hours if the weather%26#39;s changing.

Boogie boarding is basically body surfing -- with a small styrofoam-core board that you lay on.

Skim boarding is done with an elliptical board, usually made of 1/4'; - 3/8'; marine plywood -- you skim the board along the thin water (like 1/4'; deep!) right at the surfline.

You can%26#39;t do either very well when it%26#39;s rough, which is why they%26#39;re so popular here on the calmer Gulf beaches.

Thanks,

We spent a few days in Miami last year and you could float and bob in the water for hours. It seemed salty like Bermuda water so the floating was easy/ Of course, the boys couldn%26#39;t skim board there.

I appreciate your help.
