Getting around without a car???

We plan to stay at Casa Ybel in April. Is it possible to find a store to get staples (milk, bread, shampoo, etc. within walking distance from the resort. Can we still enjoy Sanibel if we don%26#39;t rent a car?

You really need a car in Sanibel. The cost alone for getting a taxi from the airport will justify getting a car. There is not a store within walking distance. You can ride a bike, but that would limit how much you could carry. You can also have groceries delivered. The island is narrow and long, and things are pretty spread out, so a car is really a must.

By the time you pay for tranfers, spotty taxi service and the like, renting a car is a bargain.

If you are from NYC, getting around without a car might not be as big a deal for you. The shuttle service charges $60 each way from RSW to the island.

You can walk or ride bikes to shops - fairly easy bike ride, longish walk if it is hot. Look at billy%26#39;s rentals or Finnemores for cost of bikes. If you guys are in good shape, getting around the island on bikes is doable. There are bike paths all around the island - but if you have health problems, I wouldn%26#39;t advise it. If you have kids, you might want to get car.

When our relatives come over from London - they ride bikes all over, since they don%26#39;t like to drive here. They are in good physical shape and don%26#39;t mind it at all.

You can also rent scooters! I think you can also get ones w/baskets. You do not need a motorcycle license just a ID. They offer 50cc which is rather small and not very much power, but enough to get around with. The cost is high but what a way to get around the island and have fun!

Just a thought and/or another option....

Another suggestion is to have your groceries delivered on the day of your arrival. Both Bailey%26#39;s and Jerry%26#39;s offers provisioning service.

This way the bulk of your shopping is done and you only have to pick up odds and ends. From Casa Ybel you have a decent walk to Bailey%26#39;s or Jerry%26#39;s, but around Bailey%26#39;s you have more choices - including an ice cream shop, small movie theater and 5-6 restaurants in addition to the ones at Casa Ybel.

While it can be done, you do need to plan more than most would. And I%26#39;d strongly suggest either bikes or mopeds for your stay so you can get around easier and see a bit more.

Personally, I always have a car for convenience.
