Best area in Florida for disney free vacation?

we are in our early 40%26#39;s and fancy a vacation in Florida this year - private villa preferably. However, we are not particularly into disney etc. and all rentals I am looking at concentrate most of their promotions on the theme park attractions. Can someone recommend a good location centrally located to the main sites Florida has to offer e.g. Kennedy Space Center and we may go to Universal and Discovery Cove. As we will have a car we are happy to do day trips to where we want to go. We are most interested in the immediate location, we would like to be in a town that has good bars/restaurants and a bit of atmosphere.

Any suggestions will be really appreciated ..... its a disney minefield out there!!!!!

You may want to look at Cocoa Beach. It%26#39;s a fun beach town, is just south of Cape Canaveral, and not too far from Orlando.
